Even if you're the only one

Those of us who still believe Leviticus 18:22, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, and Romans 1:18-32 are quite the minority these days.

Not only are we supposedly hopelessly outnumbered, but as I'm sure you already realize, we're also hopelessly outdated, hateful, narrow-minded, and intolerant. We're just a bunch of rich, angry people who hate anyone different from us and don't want other people to be happy.

Check out this article on Yahoo! News, covering the recent court rulings in favor of gay marriage - opponents of Biblical marriage "celebrated" the "historic" decisions of the Supreme Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act. Very happy, positive words, right? Lots of happy people waving pretty rainbow flags and having happy parties and other things that celebrators do. Very nice.

Now check out some of the words they used to describe the supporters of Biblical marriage. They slammed the rulings. Bashed the decisions. Reacted to the rulings. Others had a similar refrain - in other words, they were monotonous, boring, and annoying.

For the record, many more reputable news sources are being reasonably objective with their articles. However, notice how we are never called "supporters of traditional/Biblical marriage". We are always the opponents. The roadblocks. The unreasonable stick-in-the-muds who are preventing the march of social progress.

Praise the Lord. We are.

No matter how many people in the world believe that gay marriage is acceptable and normal, it's not. It is still a sin, and it always will be. God had a plan when He designed men and women to be complementary to each other, and that plan has not changed.

Last year during the Chick-fil-A brouhaha, I put together a list of verses describing God's design for marriage, and I'd like to post it again today:

***

God's Definition of Marriage Is:

One man and one woman

For as long as they both shall live

To be faithful to one another and raise godly children
To satisfy each other's needs and desires

Not two men or two women ...

... Or they will face the recompense for their sin

To model the loving, sacrificial, and hierarchical relationship of Christ and the Church

To work as a team and serve the Church together

 ***

The time is coming, very soon, when we will be ostracized and censured for believing these verses. Continuing to believe in Biblical marriage - and openly saying so - may one day become a form of hate speech, punishable under the law. But sisters, don't be afraid. You are right.

I know that many times it can feel like you're the only one left in the world (or even in the Church, because this lie is being propagated by many who call themselves Christians, too) who still believes in God's Word and God's plan - I often feel that way myself. But that's not true. For one thing, there are still thousands of us who believe God's Word just like you do, and we're standing right along side you. Even more importantly, though, if you were the only person left in the whole world who believed that God's design for marriage was right and gay marriage is wrong, you would be just as strong as if you had the world world behind you. Because the power is in the truth, not in the numbers. The power is in God's Word. He will bless you when you continue to cling to His Word in the face of opposition.

Consider this quote:

And that's what we need to do. Every day, a hundred news stories and editorials and videos and interviews are crammed down our throats, trying to convince us that this is the new wave of progress and it's hopeless to stand on the Bible anymore. But you know what? It's not going to work. We will continue to stand on the Bible, regardless of how few people continue to stand with us.

World, media - listen. "YOU move."

  1. Very soon we'll be ostracized? Nope, we already are. Even among my Christian friends I'm sadly one of the few that still believes those verses! Even if I'm the only one...Yup, I feel like that a lot!

  2. Thank you for this wonderful post, Vicki. You're absolutely correct, and I love how you put that bit at the end--we need to continue to stand with the Bible, even when it seems like the whole world is against us.

  3. I love that Captain America quote...and that is such a good list you have put together. If we believe the Bible is God's Word...it's pretty clear on what marriage is and is not. It is so heartbreaking when Truth is considered hateful...how much worse to let lies destroy because it's "nicer" to say nothing! Thanks for posting this!
